Description

Probus- Roman Temple of Roma and Venus. Great Strike Illyrian Persecution Hoard.
The temple was built by Probus to honor Venus and Rome and was a temple of love situated between the Roman Forum and the Colosseum.
Hadrian reconstructed the temple placing Venus and Roma with their backs to each other creating a lettering symbolism. As you read the names they were Amor (Venus) and Roma which spelled backwards is Amor. Newly married couples would come to the temple to make offerings.
The coins in this hoard range from Claudius Gothicus (268) to Domitian (300) and it is my estimation that these coins were hidden in fear of the terrible persecutions of Domitian. Constantine the Great followed Diocletian of course ending the persecution of the Christians.
This coin reminds me that Rome is known as the eternal city.
Probus was known as the “the restorer of the empire.”
The coin is absolutely genuine. I have owned it for approximately 50 years having bought the small hoard from Harlan Berk when I owned Texas Coins in Odessa, Texas.
