Theodosius I died in 450 AD from a hunting accident and since he had no heir, Pulcheria arranged for the Empire to pass to Senator Marcian, and made it legitimate by marrying him.  Unlike his immediate predecessors, Marcian was considered wise and competent. Unluckily, he was in the wrong place and definitely in the wrong time, and after cutting off the subsidy being paid to the Huns, he compelled Atilla to attack Italy. He did however convene the 4th Ecumenical Council at Chalcedon in 451.  He died in 457, leaving the falling empire to Leo.
